Security

DNS over HTTPS (DoH) encrypts DNS queries by transmitting them within HTTPS connections to a DoH-compatible resolver. This prevents network intermediaries from observing or manipulating DNS lookups, enhancing user privacy and security. DoH queries use standard HTTPS on port 443, making them indistinguishable from regular web traffic. Major browsers support DoH natively, with resolvers operated by Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Google (8.8.8.8), and others. For URL shortening services, DoH affects DNS resolution performance and observability. When users resolve short link domains through DoH, traditional DNS-based analytics and geographic routing become less reliable. Services must adapt their infrastructure to maintain performance while respecting the privacy benefits that DoH provides to end users.
