QR Code and NFC

A design pattern combining QR codes (optical scanning) with NFC (near-field communication) to provide the optimal connection method based on user device and context.

QR Code

QR code and NFC (Near Field Communication) represent complementary contactless technologies for delivering URLs to mobile devices. QR codes use optical scanning at distances up to several meters, while NFC requires proximity within 4 centimeters. NFC tags store URLs directly in NDEF format and trigger automatically when a compatible device touches them. QR codes require active scanning but work with any camera-equipped device. Hybrid deployments place both technologies on the same physical asset. URL shortening services can unify QR and NFC analytics by using the same short URL for both channels. This provides consistent tracking regardless of which technology the user employs, while the short URL's updatability means both the QR code and NFC tag can be redirected to new destinations simultaneously.
