What this tool does
A QR code is a two-dimensional code that turns information such as a URL or text into a pattern a smartphone camera can read. This tool creates three kinds of QR codes: destination URLs, plain text, and WiFi credentials.
In WiFi mode, enter the network name (SSID), security type, and password to create a QR code that connects a smartphone to that network just by scanning it. It is handy for guiding guests to your home router or posting in shops and meeting rooms.
Choose the size and error correction level to match how you will use the code, then save it as a PNG image. All processing happens on your device, so nothing you enter, including WiFi passwords, is ever sent anywhere.
How to create a QR code
Choose the type
At the top, pick one of three QR code types: URL, plain text, or WiFi. Use URL to point somewhere, text to share a message or note, and WiFi to let someone join a network.
Enter the content
Fill in the field for the type you chose. For a URL, use an address starting with http:// or https://; for WiFi, enter the network name (SSID), security type, and password. The preview updates as you type.
Set the size and error correction level
Choose the image size and how much of the code can be dirty or covered while still scanning (the error correction level). For printing or placing a logo in the center, pick Q or higher for extra headroom.
Save as a PNG image
Press the save button to download the image at the size you chose. You can print the saved image as is or drop it into a document or flyer.
How QR codes work
From information to a black-and-white pattern
A QR code converts your text into a sequence of ones and zeros using a fixed set of rules, then lays that sequence out as small black and white squares called modules. The larger squares at three corners are markers that help a camera find the code's position and orientation.
The more characters you enter, the more modules are needed and the finer the pattern becomes. How much fits in one code also depends on the type of content, such as digits only or letters and digits, so the same length can look denser or sparser.
The idea of error correction
A QR code carries extra, redundant data so the original information can be recovered even if part of the code is dirty or hidden. This is error correction, and it comes in four levels, L, M, Q, and H, with higher levels recovering a larger share.
Recovering more means adding more redundant data, so the same content produces a denser pattern at higher levels. For outdoor signage, small prints, or a logo placed in the center, a higher level is common to keep a comfortable scanning margin.
Making it easy to scan with size and print
Scannability comes from the relationship between the code's size and the reading distance. Signage meant to be read from far away needs to be printed larger; as a rule of thumb, a side length of about one tenth of the reading distance stays reliable.
A QR code needs a margin around it called the quiet zone, and crowding it makes scanning harder. Keeping enough contrast with the background and leaving that margin when printing are what make a QR code read reliably.
Frequently asked questions
Do generated QR codes expire?
No. A QR code is simply your input converted into an image pattern, and nothing is stored on this site's servers. To change the content, just generate a new code.
Do WiFi QR codes work on every smartphone?
iPhones (iOS 11 and later) and Android phones (10 and later) offer to connect just by pointing the standard camera at the code. Older devices may need a QR code reader app.
Is the URL or password I enter stored anywhere?
No. QR code generation happens entirely inside your browser, and your input never reaches this site's servers.
Can I put a logo in the center of the QR code?
This tool does not overlay logos, but you can add one by editing the saved PNG in an image editor. If you do, set the error correction level to Q or H so the code can still be read even where the logo covers part of it.
Why does the pattern get finer with a long URL or text?
A QR code turns your input directly into a pattern, so longer content needs more cells and produces a finer pattern. If it becomes too fine to scan, shorten the content or turn it into a short URL first before generating the code.
