Synthetic Monitoring

A monitoring technique that periodically sends scripted requests to continuously measure service availability and response speed from external vantage points.

Redirect

Synthetic monitoring uses scripted transactions executed from distributed locations to proactively test service availability and performance. Unlike real-user monitoring which observes actual traffic, synthetic monitoring generates artificial requests on a schedule to detect issues before users encounter them. Synthetic checks for URL shorteners typically include: DNS resolution time, redirect latency from multiple geographic regions, API endpoint availability, SSL certificate validity, and end-to-end redirect chain verification. URL shortening services rely on synthetic monitoring to maintain their SLA commitments. By continuously testing redirect performance from global locations, services detect regional outages, DNS propagation issues, or degraded performance before they impact significant user traffic. Alerts trigger automated failover or escalation procedures.
