Domain names have no spaces or case distinction, making word boundaries ambiguous. This has produced "unfortunate domain names" that accidentally read as something completely different.
One of the most famous is `penisland.net`, a pen sales site for "Pen Island" that reads quite differently without spaces. Similarly, `therapistfinder.com` ("Therapist Finder") can be read another way. `whorepresents.com` ("Who Represents"), a talent agent search site, suffers the same fate. These demonstrate the structural problem of English word boundaries disappearing in domain names.
Intentionally bizarre domains also exist.
Some sites challenge domain name length. The longest known domain uses all 63 characters (the maximum domain label length per DNS specifications). The full domain name maximum is 253 characters. Conversely, the shortest domains are 1 character: `x.com` (now Twitter/X), `t.co` (Twitter's short URL), `g.co` (Google's short URL). Single-character domains are extremely rare and can trade for millions of dollars.
Country code domains offer more oddities. Colombia's `.co` is used worldwide as a "company" abbreviation. Montenegro's `.me` is popular for personal sites. Tonga's `.to` serves as the English preposition "to" for redirect services. Domain names are both internet addresses and a fascinating intersection of human creativity and language.
