SEO

URL canonicalization is the process of selecting a single authoritative URL when multiple URLs serve identical or substantially similar content. The canonical URL receives all search ranking signals, preventing duplicate content penalties and link equity dilution. Canonicalization is implemented via `<link rel="canonical">` tags, 301 redirects, or sitemap declarations. Search engines use these signals to consolidate ranking power onto the preferred URL version. For URL shortening services, canonicalization intersects with redirect strategy. Short URLs should not be indexed as canonical versions of destination content-they should pass link equity through 301 redirects. Services must ensure their redirect implementation correctly signals to search engines that the destination, not the short URL, is the canonical resource.
